About this tour

This session looks at Gothenburg Cathedral from outside, the third church built on this site after fire destroyed the previous two. You see the building's early nineteenth-century exterior and the square it sits within. Oskar connects the cathedral's position directly to the planned grid Gothenburg was founded on.

He moves around the square at a measured pace, describing each of the two earlier churches in turn before returning to the current building. Questions about the city's Dutch-influenced founding come up regularly, and he answers with detail from his own training.

This suits anyone interested in how deliberately Gothenburg was planned compared with older Swedish towns. It pairs with Oskar's second session at Kronhuset, from roughly the same founding period.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Gothenburg before heading out.

  2. Cathedral exterior 15 min

The camera looks at Gothenburg Cathedral from outside, rebuilt in the early nineteenth century after fire destroyed the second church to stand on this site.

  3. A city planned from the start 15 min

Standing back in the square, I explain how the cathedral's position fits the wider grid Gothenburg was laid out on when the Swedish crown founded it with Dutch help in 1621.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Gothenburg: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Toast Skagen and Majorna, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Stockholm time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
