The harbour fort and the cathedral square
Highlights
- A fortress guarding the harbour mouth
- A cathedral finished later than it looks
- Water and centre, two sides of town
- A stone facade above the main square
- History explained on both sides of town
About this tour
This session pairs two very different buildings on opposite sides of the old town. You see a small fortress sitting right at the harbour entrance, then the Orthodox cathedral in the main square with its stone facade. It moves at an easy pace between the water and the centre of town.
I start down by the harbour while the light is still soft on the water, then move up toward the square once the streets start to fill. Questions about either building are welcome throughout, and I try to answer both in real detail rather than rushing between them.
This suits anyone who wants a short but proper look at two sides of the town's history. It also suits anyone deciding whether to spend more time by the water or in the centre.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Herceg Novi before heading out.
-
Forte Mare 21 min
You see a small fortress sitting right at the harbour entrance, its terrace opening almost onto the water, and I explain how it once guarded the town from the sea rather than from the hills.
-
Archangel Michael's Cathedral 21 min
The camera settles on an Orthodox cathedral standing at the centre of the old town's main square, and I describe how it was finished only in the early twentieth century, later than most visitors guess.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Herceg Novi: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Njeguški sir (smoked cheese) and Topla, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Podgorica time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
