Through the gate, into a rebuilt cathedral city
Highlights
- A Baroque gate built as a showpiece
- A cathedral rebuilt after an earthquake
- Malta's old capital, reshaped in stone
- Centuries of history behind one gate
- A city rebuilt after 1693
About this tour
This session walks from Mdina's main gate to its cathedral, both largely rebuilt after Malta's 1693 earthquake reshaped the old capital. You see the gate's Baroque carvings and the cathedral's facade, learning how much of what stands today dates from the rebuilding rather than the medieval original. The camera stays on the public streets and square throughout.
I start at the gate, explaining its later Baroque rebuilding, then walk to the cathedral for a closer look at its facade. I take questions throughout and send a short timeline of the earthquake and rebuilding afterwards.
It suits anyone interested in how a natural disaster can reshape a historic city. It also works well as a first stop before exploring the rest of Mdina's silent streets.

The camera holds on the Baroque gate into the city, and I explain how it was rebuilt in the 18th century as a grand entrance rather than only a defensive one.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
