Karmenu Zammit

I grew up in Rabat, just outside the walls, and have spent most of my working life inside Mdina explaining its history to visitors. On camera I like starting at the main gate, since its Baroque carvings tell you immediately that this was rebuilt as a showpiece rather than only a defence. I usually move on to the cathedral, rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake destroyed the original, and point out a few details that survived from before the disaster. I studied history at the University of Malta and still enjoy telling the stories behind the noble families whose palaces line these streets.
