The square at the centre of Graz

- Five centuries of facades, side by side
- The square at the centre of it all
- Rebuilt after fires more than once
- Graz's old town, from its centre
About this tour
This short walk covers the main square at the centre of Graz. You see the statue of an archduke still remembered fondly here and the pastel facades ringing the square, rebuilt across five centuries of fires and change. It stays within the square itself rather than moving into the surrounding lanes.
I move around the square slowly, pointing out which facades date from which century as we go. Questions about the buildings and the statue are welcome throughout.
This suits anyone who wants Graz's central square explained properly before exploring further. It also works well as a first orientation to the old town.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Graz before heading out.
-
Archduke Johann Statue 15 min
The camera finds the statue at the centre of the square, and I explain why this particular archduke is still remembered so fondly here centuries after his death.
-
Hauptplatz Facades 15 min
Looking around the square, I point out how the pastel facades represent five centuries of rebuilding after fires and wars reshaped the buildings more than once.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Graz: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Käferbohnensalat (Styrian bean salad) and Gries, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
