Land Gate and a stretch of the walls
Highlights
- A Renaissance gate from 1543
- A winged lion carved in stone
- Venetian walls, UNESCO listed
- Why this coast needed fortifying
- A first look at the old town
About this tour
This session starts at Zadar's Land Gate, a Renaissance gate designed by Michele Sanmicheli in 1543, then follows a stretch of the Venetian walls beside it. You see the carved winged lion above the arch and then the ramparts themselves, part of a defensive system now listed as UNESCO World Heritage. It sets up how the old town peninsula was once sealed off almost entirely.
We start under the gate with a sound check, then walk the wall stretch for the second stop, taking questions about the carving and the fortifications as we go. A short list follows once the call ends.
It suits anyone who wants Zadar's defences explained before wandering the old town freely. It also works as a solid first session for a first visit to the city.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
