South Bank from the Globe to the Eye
Highlights
- A reconstructed Elizabethan theatre
- Warehouses turned independent shops
- A temporary structure that stayed
- A promenade built for walking
- Nearly a mile of riverside history
About this tour
This session walks the South Bank promenade from the reconstructed Globe theatre to the London Eye, covering how a stretch of former warehouses became one of the city's busiest riverside walks. It takes in independent shops at Gabriel's Wharf and the Eye's surprising origin as a temporary structure. It is a broad introduction to one of London's most walked riverside routes.
We start at the Globe with its reconstruction story, then walk the promenade at an easy pace, stopping at Gabriel's Wharf along the way. Questions about specific buildings or the river itself come up steadily throughout. I finish facing the Eye with a note on the best light for photographs across the water.
It suits first-time visitors wanting a broad, well-paced introduction to the South Bank. It also suits anyone who enjoys a longer walk with plenty to look at along the way.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 6 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of London before heading out.
-
Globe exterior 17 min
The camera holds on the reconstructed timber and thatch of Shakespeare's Globe, and I explain how the rebuild followed the original's circular open-air design as closely as records allowed.
-
Gabriel's Wharf 17 min
Walking further along, you see a small cluster of independent shops and studios built on a former industrial site, and I point out how the riverside here was mostly warehouses within living memory.
-
London Eye approach 17 min
The route ends facing the London Eye, and I explain its original status as a temporary millennium structure that ended up staying far longer than planned.
-
Your questions 11 min
Time to ask anything about London: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 5 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Afternoon tea and Soho, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
