  • A calm night session in the old town

About this tour

This session looks at the Cathedral once darkness falls and the floodlights bring out the depth of its carving. You see the towers against the night sky from the square below, and hear why nearby buildings were kept deliberately low to protect the view. It stays in the square throughout.

We wait for the light to settle before starting properly, then I explain the lighting design and the planning rules behind the square's low skyline. Questions come naturally in the calmer evening atmosphere. A short note on visiting at night follows by message.

It suits anyone who has already seen the cathedral by day and wants the evening version too. It also works well as a calm way to end an evening in the old town.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Cologne before heading out.

  2. Floodlit facade 15 min

The camera holds on the towers once the floodlights come on, and I explain how the lighting scheme was designed to emphasise the depth of the stone carving.

  3. Domplatz at night 15 min

In the square below, you see the cathedral's scale against the night sky, and I point out how the surrounding buildings were kept low to preserve the view.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Cologne: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Reibekuchen (potato pancakes) and Belgisches Viertel, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Berlin time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
