Castello di San Giusto, two empires on one hill
Highlights
- Two empires, one hilltop fortress
- Venetian walls, Austrian additions
- The port, seen from above
- Trieste's defensive history, explained
- A view built for watching the gulf
About this tour
This session covers Castello di San Giusto, built first by Venice and later expanded under Austrian rule. You see the fortress walls up close, then walk the ramparts for a view over the port below, built to give defenders sight across the whole gulf. It is a short session on two empires building on the same hill.
We start with a sound check at the entrance, since it can be windy on the hill. I move along the ramparts for the second stop and take your questions about either period of construction as we go. A short reading note follows by message afterwards.
It suits anyone with an interest in fortification or a proper view over Trieste's port. It also works well paired with a session at the cathedral beside it.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Trieste before heading out.
-
Castello di San Giusto exterior 15 min
The camera takes in the fortress walls, and I explain how the Republic of Venice built the first defences here before Austrian rulers expanded them centuries later.
-
Castle ramparts, port view 15 min
We walk along the ramparts, and I point out the port below and how far a defender could once see across the gulf.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Trieste: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Sardoni in savor and Borgo Teresiano, worth a slower look.
Good to know

- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.

- Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
