  • A quick, view-heavy half hour

About this tour

This short session covers two defensive structures built to protect Strasbourg's water approach: the Ponts Couverts and Vauban's dam. You see the medieval towers up close before climbing to the dam's rooftop terrace for a wide view back across the canals. Élise explains how the two structures worked together to control both flooding and attack.

The call starts right at the first bridge tower and moves a short distance to the dam. Élise answers questions as she goes rather than waiting, since the view changes with every step along the terrace. She sends a short list of what you saw once the call wraps up.

This suits anyone with half an hour and an interest in military or water engineering. It also works as a quick add-on before or after a longer old town session.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Strasbourg before heading out.

  2. Ponts Couverts 15 min

The camera crosses one of the covered bridges slowly, its stone tower rising directly from the water. I explain that the wooden roofs which gave the bridges their name disappeared long ago, though the name stuck.

  3. Barrage Vauban 15 min

From the rooftop terrace of Vauban's dam, you see the old town's towers lined up across the water. I point out the carved stone figures set into the dam's arches, added long after Vauban's original design.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Strasbourg: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Munster cheese and Neustadt, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Paris time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
