About this tour
This session climbs the hill south of the old town to a working fort and the strange tunnel system cut into the rock beneath it. You see the fort's stone walls up close, the dark mouth of the marl tunnels, and finally a wide view back over the river valley. It is the outdoor, hillier side of the city that most first-time visitors never reach.
We start at the base of the hill and climb gradually, so the view builds gradually too rather than arriving all at once. I pause longer at the tunnel entrance than anywhere else, since most people have questions about how they were dug and used.
It suits anyone who prefers open air and a longer walk over a dense city-centre session. Viewers interested in geology or wartime history tend to stay longest on this one.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 7 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Maastricht before heading out.
-
Fort Sint Pieter 21 min
You see the eighteenth-century hilltop fort built to guard the city's southern approach, and I explain why it was placed here rather than closer to the centre.
-
Sint Pietersberg Tunnels 21 min
The camera looks into the mouth of the marl-quarry tunnels cut into the hill, and I explain how centuries of digging for building stone left this maze behind.
-
Bastion Viewpoint 21 min
From the fort's old bastion we look back over the Maas valley, and I point out how far you can see on a clear day and why the site was chosen for exactly that reason.
-
Your questions 14 min
Time to ask anything about Maastricht: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 6 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Limburgse kaas and Binnenstad, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Amsterdam time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
