About this tour
This session looks at how the city literally built new ground to fit its main railway station, and the street that grew from the water it replaced. You see the station's detailed nineteenth-century facade and then the busy street leading away from it, once a stretch of open harbour. It shows how much of what feels like solid old Amsterdam was actually shaped only a century or so ago.
We start at the station forecourt and walk the length of the street toward the centre, timing our pace so we are not fighting through the busiest crowds. I point out where the old waterline would have run as we go.
It suits anyone curious about how cities reshape their own geography over time. It also works well as a practical orientation before exploring the centre independently.

You see the ornate nineteenth-century station building, and I explain how it was built on three artificial islands sunk into the harbour to make room for it.

-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Dutch cheese (Gouda, Edam) and Jordaan, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
