South Street, the town's mediaeval spine
Highlights

- A street unchanged in width for centuries
- A university courtyard off the street
- Mediaeval plots turned into college buildings
- The town's original layout explained
About this tour
This session walks South Street from its old west gate to a university close leading off it, tracing the town's original mediaeval layout. You see the surviving West Port and a quiet courtyard tucked behind the main street. Hamish explains how the street's shape has barely changed since it was first laid out.
After a short sound check at the gate, the walk moves along the street at an easy pace, pausing in the close for questions. Hamish answers as you go and sends a short note afterwards on which buildings along the street are the oldest.
It suits anyone interested in how a small mediaeval town's layout survives into the present, and works well as an introduction before exploring further. It also appeals to architecture fans.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
