Como's Silk Museum and the streets behind it
Highlights
- A city built on silk
- A museum in a former school
- Mills, hidden among newer streets
- Como's forgotten industrial past
- One trade, an entire city's wealth
About this tour
This session covers Como's Silk Museum and the streets around it that once held the mills the industry depended on. You see the former school building housing the collection and hear how Como became one of Europe's main silk-weaving centres, then walk streets nearby where a few industrial facades still survive between newer buildings. It traces an industry that shaped the whole city's wealth.
We start with a sound check outside the museum building, since the street can carry some traffic noise. I move into the surrounding streets for the second stop and take your questions about the industry's history as we go. A short reading list follows by message afterwards.
It suits anyone with an interest in industrial history or textiles. It also works well paired with a session on Como's modern architecture, much of it built on silk money.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
