  • A ruling family's private stronghold
  • Medieval sculpture, gathered from the region
  • Castelvecchio's courtyard, up close

About this tour

This session covers Castelvecchio, the fourteenth-century fortress built by Verona's ruling Scaliger family. You see the brick towers and battlements from outside, built for defence and for a private escape route, then move into the courtyard, filmed from the public areas, to hear about the sculpture collection housed inside today. It is a short session on power built in brick and stone.

We start with a sound check outside the main gate, since the road nearby can be busy. I move into the courtyard for the second stop and take your questions about the Scaliger family or the museum as we go. A short reading list follows by message afterwards.

It suits anyone with an interest in medieval fortification or a ruling family's history. It also works well paired with a session on the bridge attached to the fortress.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Verona before heading out.

  2. Castelvecchio exterior 21 min

The camera takes in the fortress's brick towers and battlements, and I explain how the Scaliger family built it in the fourteenth century both to defend the city and to guarantee their own escape route.

  3. Castelvecchio courtyard 21 min

We move into the courtyard, filmed from the areas open to visitors, and I point out how the museum inside now displays medieval sculpture recovered from across the region.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Verona: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Risotto all'Amarone and Centro storico, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Rome time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
