Innbær and Akureyri's oldest wooden houses
Highlights
- Akureyri's oldest wooden houses
- The site of the original settlement
- A local museum tracing the town's growth
- A quarter predating the modern centre
- Quiet streets away from the harbour
About this tour
This session walks the oldest part of Akureyri, a quarter of preserved wooden houses that predates the town centre most visitors see first. You see the streets where the original settlement stood and the local museum that now tells that history. It moves slowly, since the quarter rewards a close look rather than a quick pass.
After a short sound check on the first street, I walk the quarter stop by stop, explaining how the town's centre shifted north over time. I answer questions live and send a short note afterwards on the museum's collection for anyone who wants to visit further.
It suits anyone interested in early settlement history, and anyone who prefers quiet residential streets to a busier town centre.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Akureyri before heading out.
-
Innbær's wooden streets 15 min
The camera moves along preserved wooden houses in the old inner town, and I explain how this was the site of Akureyri's earliest settlement before the harbour trade moved the centre north.
-
Akureyri Museum exterior 15 min
You see the local history museum from its garden, and I point out how its collection traces the town's growth from a trading post to a fishing port.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Akureyri: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Flatkaka with smoked lamb and Miðbær, worth a slower look.

- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.

- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
