Asansör: Karataş's historic lift
Highlights
- A nine-storey lift built in 1907
- Karataş's steep clifftop street
- Rooftop views toward the bay
- Old stairs beside a modern shortcut
- A neighbourhood engineering story
About this tour
This session rides the Asansör, a nine-storey lift built in 1907 to connect a clifftop street in Karataş with the neighbourhood below it. You see the inside of the lift itself and the viewing terrace at the top, looking down over the rooftops toward the bay. Onur, who grew up a few streets away, explains why the slope made a lift necessary rather than a novelty.
The call opens with a sound check at the base of the lift, then rides up before stepping out onto the terrace. Onur answers questions about the neighbourhood's history and sends a short note afterwards on how the area has changed since he was a child.
This suits anyone curious about Izmir's smaller pieces of engineering history rather than only its ruins. It also works well paired with a wider Kordon waterfront session.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
