About this tour

This call looks closely at the Wales Millennium Centre's distinctive bronze facade, cut through with lines of a bilingual poem, and the plaza in front of it. You see the lettering up close and the building's full shape from the open square. I explain the thinking behind such an unusual facade.

We start close to the bronze for the lettering, then step back into the plaza for the wider view. Questions come up naturally, and I send the poem's text afterwards if you want to read it in full.

It suits art and design fans and anyone curious about contemporary architecture. It also works well timed for early evening when the lettering is lit.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Cardiff before heading out.

  2. Bronze facade close-up 15 min

Standing close to the building's curved bronze front, you see individual letters of a bilingual poem cut right through the metal, glowing when the lights come on behind them.

  3. Roald Dahl Plass 15 min

From the open plaza in front of the centre, you see the full sweep of the building's copper-coloured dome, and I explain what stood on this exact spot before the bay was redeveloped.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Cardiff: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Bara brith and Cardiff Bay, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
