The Aljafería, an Islamic palace in northern Spain
Highlights
- Horseshoe arches in original stone
- Northern Spain's best-preserved Islamic palace
- Centuries of rulers, one building
- Mudéjar ceilings added later
- Where Moorish and Christian work meet
About this tour
This session walks the Aljafería Palace, an eleventh century Moorish palace and the best-preserved Islamic-era building in northern Spain. You see horseshoe arches in the original courtyard and later Mudéjar ceilings added by subsequent rulers. Javier explains how different powers built onto the same structure over centuries.
The walk moves from the courtyard into the palace's interior rooms, with Javier pointing out where original Moorish work meets later Christian additions. He answers questions about the building's long, layered history as they come up.
This suits anyone interested in architecture that spans several distinct periods in one building. It also pairs well with Javier's Roman walls session for the city's earlier history.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
