Linnaeus's garden, bed by bed
Highlights
- A garden ordered by plant class
- An eighteenth-century plan, still followed
- The restored orangery, explained
- Species drawn from Linnaeus's own notes
- A slower, close look at a famous garden
About this tour
This session walks through Linnaeus's own botanical garden, laid out to his original plan and still grouped by plant class rather than colour. You see the entrance beds and the restored orangery. I explain why this arrangement looked so unusual to visitors at the time.
We move bed by bed at a slow pace, since a garden built around a system rewards close attention more than a quick pass. I take questions on any plant as we reach it. Near the end I point out a few species drawn straight from Linnaeus's own notes.
This suits anyone with an interest in botany or garden history, or simply a calmer session than a busy square. It also works well for viewers curious about how science once organised the world.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Uppsala before heading out.
-
The entrance beds 21 min
You see the garden laid out exactly to Linnaeus's own plan, plants grouped by class rather than colour. I explain why that grouping looked so strange to visitors used to gardens arranged for appearance.
-
The orangery 21 min
The camera reaches the restored building where more fragile plants overwintered. I point out which species Linnaeus actually grew here himself, based on his own notes.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Uppsala: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Shrimp sandwich (räksmörgås) and Svartbäcken, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Stockholm time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
