About this tour

This session walks the open moor at Culloden, the site of the last major battle fought on British soil in 1746. You see the wide, largely unchanged moorland and the memorial cairn viewed from a respectful distance. Hamish explains how the shape of the ground itself affected what happened here, sticking closely to what's actually documented.

After a short sound check at the edge of the moor, the session moves across it at a measured pace, with time for questions throughout. Hamish answers as you go and sends a short reading list afterwards for anyone who wants more detail.

It suits anyone with a serious interest in this period of Scottish history, and works well before a more detailed visit of your own. It also appeals to those with family connections to the events.

  • Live video walk with a local guide

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Inverness before heading out.

  2. The open moor 21 min

The camera takes in the wide, open moorland where the battle was fought in 1746, largely unchanged in shape. Hamish explains how the ground's openness shaped the battle's outcome.

  3. The memorial cairn from a distance 21 min

From a respectful distance, the camera shows the memorial cairn standing alone on the moor. Hamish explains what the cairn marks and why it stands where it does.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Inverness: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Scottish smoked salmon and Crown, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
