Sint-Janshospitaal and the art of Memling
Highlights
- Eight centuries of caring for the sick
- Memling's altarpieces, described in detail
- One of Europe's oldest hospitals
- Medicine and art, side by side
- Bruges' hospital, a painter's legacy
About this tour
This session covers Sint-Janshospitaal, one of Europe's oldest surviving hospital buildings, and the Memling paintings it now holds. You see the old hospital exterior and hear how it cared for the sick and pilgrims for over eight centuries, then hear a detailed description of Memling's altarpieces from the museum doorway. It links medical history to one of Bruges' finest painters.
We start with a sound check outside the building, since the street can be busy with visitors. I describe the paintings carefully from the doorway, then take your questions about the hospital or the artist as we go. A short reading list follows by message afterwards.
It suits anyone with an interest in medical history or Flemish painting. It also works well before visiting the museum's collection yourself.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
