Highlights
- Whitewashed lanes built by island workers
- Bougainvillea over low garden walls
- A chapel barely wider than a doorway
- Cycladic style architecture on the Acropolis rock
- A nineteenth century island settlement in the city
About this tour
This walk climbs through Anafiotika, the small Cycladic style neighbourhood built into the north slope of the Acropolis rock. Yiannis shows the whitewashed lanes and tiny chapels left by the island workers who settled here in the nineteenth century. The camera moves slowly up the steps so the island style architecture comes through clearly.
Yiannis checks the connection at the bottom of the steps before climbing at an easy pace, stopping often where the lanes narrow. He answers questions about the neighbourhood's history as an island workers' settlement and points out small details like the garden walls and door frames. A short list of what was seen follows the call.
This suits travellers who want to see a different side of the Acropolis area beyond the ruins themselves. It also works well for anyone interested in island architecture without travelling to the islands.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
