Mercado de la Ribera, top to bottom
Highlights
- One of Europe's largest covered markets
- Seafood landed that same morning
- Three floors, organised by type
- Ironwork built to last a century
- A market seen from top to bottom
About this tour
This session moves through the Mercado de la Ribera, one of Europe's largest covered markets, from its ground-floor fish hall to the produce stalls above. You see seafood brought in that morning from the Cantabrian coast and the ironwork that holds the whole building together. Nekane explains how the market's three floors keep everything organised by type.
The walk moves floor by floor, starting at the fish counters and climbing to the produce stalls, with Nekane asking sellers to explain their own counters wherever she can. She keeps a slow pace in the fish hall especially, since much of what is on display needs explaining.
This suits anyone curious about Basque food culture beyond a pintxo bar. It also works well for viewers planning their own visit who want to know the market's layout in advance.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
