About this tour

This walk covers Kypseli, one of the most mixed neighbourhoods in Athens, through its covered market, a family grocery and the tree-lined square at its centre. Katerina explains how the district went from a fashionable 1930s address to one of the city's most diverse areas today. The camera stays close to the stalls and shopfronts so the range of goods on offer comes through clearly.

Katerina checks her connection outside the market before walking the aisles slowly, stopping at stalls that show the neighbourhood's mix best. She answers questions about the different communities living in the area as she moves toward the square. A short list of the market stalls and shops follows by message.

This suits travellers curious about the more ordinary, lived-in side of Athens rather than the historic centre. It also works for anyone interested in food from across the Mediterranean and beyond.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 6 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Athens before heading out.

  2. The covered market hall 17 min

Katerina walks the aisles of Kypseli's old covered market, the camera taking in stalls selling everything from Greek cheeses to spices and vegetables brought in from across the Mediterranean.

  3. A corner grocery 17 min

Outside a small grocery run by a family from Egypt, she points out shelves stocked with ingredients for several different cuisines side by side, a sign of how the neighbourhood has changed.

  4. Fokionos Negri square 17 min

Along the tree-lined square that cuts through the district, you see the art deco apartment buildings that once made Kypseli one of the city's most fashionable addresses.

  5. Your questions 11 min

Time to ask anything about Athens: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 5 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Greek salad and Monastiraki, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Athens time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
