About this tour

This session centres on Piazza Sant'Oronzo, where a buried Roman amphitheatre, a column moved from Brindisi and the daily life of the square all overlap. You see the arena from ground level, the column up close, and the wider square that ties them together. Everything here is visible from public ground.

I usually start with a sound check on the square, then move between the three points, pausing longer wherever questions come up. Since the square stays busy through the day, I sometimes wait a moment for a gap before filming a wider shot, and I send a short summary of the history afterwards.

It suits anyone interested in how a modern city square can sit directly on top of an ancient one. It also works as a first stop before exploring the rest of the old town on foot.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 6 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Lecce before heading out.

  2. The amphitheatre pit 17 min

The camera looks down into the sunken arena from street level, and I explain how the whole structure stayed buried under later buildings until it was uncovered in the 1930s.

  3. Column of Sant'Oronzo 17 min

Turning to the tall column nearby, I point out that it once stood in Brindisi and was brought here to mark the end of the old Appian Way.

  4. Piazza Sant'Oronzo 17 min

A wider shot of the square shows how the ancient arena, the Roman column and the daily life of the square all sit within a few steps of each other.

  5. Your questions 11 min

Time to ask anything about Lecce: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 5 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Puccia salentina and Centro storico, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Rome time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
