Salthill promenade and the diving tower
Highlights
- A century of family walks by the sea
- Galway Bay along the whole promenade
- The traditional diving tower turning point
- A local's own childhood by the water
- An easy coastal walk, dawn or dusk
About this tour
This session follows Galway's seafront promenade to the diving tower that marks its traditional end point, told by someone who grew up swimming off it every summer. You see the open bay alongside the walk and the tower itself up close. It stays along the water throughout, moving at a relaxed pace.
After a short sound check at the start of the promenade, I walk stop by stop with time to take in the bay before I explain its history. I take questions live as they come and send a short note afterwards on swimming conditions for anyone who wants to try it themselves.
It suits anyone who enjoys coastal walks, and anyone curious about a piece of everyday Galway life rather than only its historic centre.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Galway before heading out.
-
The Salthill promenade 21 min
The camera follows the long seafront promenade, and I explain how generations of Galway families, including my own, have walked this same stretch for over a century.
-
Blackrock diving tower 21 min
You see the concrete diving tower at the promenade's end, and I point out how it has marked the traditional turning point of the walk since it was built.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Galway: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Galway Bay oysters and Claddagh, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Dublin time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
