Volk's Railway and the seafront it runs along
Highlights
- The world's oldest working electric line
- Small carriages passing along the track
- A seafront route unchanged for a century
- History explained from the platform edge
- A quiet corner of a busy seafront
About this tour
This call walks the seafront beside the world's oldest operating electric railway, watching the small carriages pass along the track from the promenade. You see the line itself up close first, then the wider stretch of seafront it has run beside for well over a century. I explain what has kept the railway running this long.
We time the walk to catch the carriages passing more than once, taking questions about the line's history along the way. A short note on the railway's age follows by message.
This suits anyone interested in transport history and quieter seafront corners. It also works well as a calmer session between two livelier calls.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Brighton before heading out.
-
The trackside platform 15 min
The camera holds on a small carriage passing along the narrow track, and I explain why this line is considered the oldest of its kind still running anywhere.
-
The seafront it follows 15 min
You follow the promenade the line runs beside, and I point out how little the route has changed since the railway first opened in the 1880s.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Brighton: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Sussex ale and Hanover, worth a slower look.
Good to know

- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
