East End shopfronts, old and new
Highlights
- Decades-old signage still visible
- A cafe in a building with a long history
- A street's shape outlasting its shops
- Change without losing character
- East End streets away from the market
About this tour
This session walks a stretch of Gallowgate looking at how the East End's shopfronts have changed hands while keeping much of their original structure. You see older signage surviving above newer businesses and a recently opened cafe in a building with a long history of trades. Niall explains how the street keeps its shape even as what happens inside it changes.
After a short sound check at one end of the street, the walk moves steadily along at an easy pace, with questions welcomed throughout. Niall answers as you go and sends a short note afterwards on the street's older buildings worth noticing.
It suits anyone interested in how a working-class area changes over time, and works well alongside a Barras market session. It also appeals to those interested in urban history generally.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
