The Culture Zone, building by building
Highlights
- Spodek's saucer roof, up close
- A concert hall that earned UNESCO status
- Pithead towers kept above a museum
- Three buildings, one cultural district
- Coal city, rebuilt around music
About this tour
This session covers three buildings that make up Katowice's Culture Zone: Spodek, the NOSPR concert hall and the Silesian Museum. You see Spodek's saucer-shaped roof, the modern concert hall that helped earn the city its UNESCO music status, and the original pithead towers kept above the museum's underground galleries. It is a close look at how Katowice has rebuilt its identity around music and design on top of a coal mining site.
We move between the three buildings with a short sound check at Spodek, pausing at each to explain its role and history. I take questions throughout and connect the architecture back to the city's mining history where it applies. A written list of the buildings follows afterwards.
It suits anyone interested in modern architecture or how a city can rebuild its identity around culture. It also pairs well with a session inside the Silesian Museum itself.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 6 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Katowice before heading out.
-
Spodek exterior 17 min
The camera opens outside Spodek, the saucer-shaped arena built in the 1970s, and I explain why its design became one of the most recognisable images of the communist era.
-
NOSPR concert hall 17 min
We move to the modern concert hall next door, and I explain how it helped earn Katowice its status as a UNESCO City of Music.
-
Silesian Museum pithead towers 17 min
From outside the Silesian Museum, you see the original pithead towers left standing above the mine the museum is built into, a deliberate link between old and new.
-
Your questions 11 min
Time to ask anything about Katowice: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 5 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Modra kapusta and Giszowiec, worth a slower look.
Good to know

- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Warsaw time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
