The Seven Churches of Santo Stefano
Highlights
- Seven churches, now four
- A legendary stone basin
- Centuries of rebuilding, stone by stone
- The complex's oldest surviving chapel
- Small courtyards, layered history
About this tour
This session moves through Santo Stefano's cluster of connected medieval churches, once seven and now four after centuries of rebuilding. You see the entrance courtyard, an inner courtyard with its legendary stone basin, and the complex's oldest surviving chapel. The camera stays close throughout, since the buildings themselves are small and intimate rather than grand.
We move courtyard by courtyard rather than trying to cover the whole complex at once, since each one has its own separate story. I explain the legends attached to certain stones as we go, and take questions on the rebuilding history.
It suits anyone interested in early medieval architecture and local legend together. It also pairs naturally with the porticoes session that ends nearby.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 6 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Bologna before heading out.
-
Courtyard entrance 17 min
The camera enters through the first courtyard, and I explain how what looks like one basilica is actually a cluster of connected churches built up over different centuries.
-
Pilate's courtyard 17 min
In a smaller inner courtyard, I show a stone basin long associated with Pontius Pilate, a legend with no real evidence but centuries of local belief behind it.
-
Oldest chapel 17 min
The final stop holds the complex's oldest surviving chapel, and the camera stays still long enough to show how plain and dim the earliest building really was.
-
Your questions 11 min
Time to ask anything about Bologna: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 5 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Lasagne alla bolognese and Università, worth a slower look.

- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.

- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
