About this tour

This session traces the short walk between the imperial palace and the cathedral nearby. You see the Hofburg's eighteenth-century facade and garden wall, then move inside the cathedral to its painted ceiling frescoes. It follows how closely court and church sat together in this part of the city.

I move at a steady pace between the three stops, since each one connects to the same period of building under Empress Maria Theresia. Questions about the Habsburgs are welcome throughout, and I enjoy going into real depth when they come up.

This suits anyone interested in how imperial power and religion sat side by side here. It also suits anyone who prefers history explained through buildings rather than through a museum's actual collection.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide
  • Questions to your guide all the way
  • A short list of places to visit later

Not included

  • Internet connection
  • Travel to the city

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 6 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Innsbruck before heading out.

  2. Hofburg Courtyard 17 min

From the palace courtyard, the camera takes in the yellow facade added when Empress Maria Theresia rebuilt much of the residence in the eighteenth century.

  3. Hofburg Garden Wall 17 min

Along the garden wall, I explain how the palace connects directly to the Hofkirche next door, a link built so the imperial family never had to step outside for Mass.

  4. Cathedral of St James 17 min

Inside the cathedral, the camera finds the ceiling frescoes added during an eighteenth-century rebuild, painted to look far more three-dimensional than the flat surface actually is.

  5. Your questions 11 min

Time to ask anything about Innsbruck: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 5 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Kasspatzln and Altstadt, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Vienna time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How it works

  • You get one join link after booking.
  • Join from any device: phone, tablet or laptop.
  • We meet on Google Meet and the link comes with your booking. I trained inside the Hofburg's collections before the pivot to video, and I still find myself narrating rooms I can no longer show you directly.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
