Walking Ortigia's edge, where the walls meet the sea
Highlights
- Fortification walls meeting the sea
- A bridge linking island and mainland
- Centuries of defence built into one perimeter
- Fishing boats still moored below the walls
- Ortigia's edge, walked in full
About this tour
This session walks the perimeter of Ortigia, where old fortification walls meet the sea directly around much of the island. You see one of the bridges connecting the island to the mainland, stretches of wall from different periods, and fishing boats still moored beneath them. The route stays on public streets and the seafront throughout.
I walk the edge of the island at a steady pace, pointing out where different building periods meet along the walls, and take questions as we go. I send a short map of the route afterwards.
It suits anyone who wants a longer walk that takes in the shape of the whole island rather than a single site. It also pairs well with the Temple of Apollo session at the start of the route.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 6 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Syracuse before heading out.
-
The old bridge 17 min
The camera crosses one of the bridges connecting Ortigia to the mainland, and I explain how the island's isolation shaped its defence for centuries.
-
The seaward walls 17 min
Walking along the edge, you see stretches of old fortification wall meeting the water directly, and I point out where later additions were built onto older Greek and medieval sections.
-
A quiet corner of the perimeter 17 min
At a quieter point, the camera shows fishing boats moored just below the walls, still part of daily life on the island.
-
Your questions 11 min
Time to ask anything about Syracuse: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 5 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Granita di limone and Ortigia, worth a slower look.
Good to know

- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.

- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
