Luostarinmäki, the district the fire missed
Highlights
- The one district an 1827 fire spared
- Original joinery, restored by hand
- A weaver's cottage, kept as it was
- Craft explained joint by joint
- Wood that survived nearly two centuries
About this tour
This session walks through Luostarinmäki, the only part of Turku the 1827 fire never reached, from a carpenter's workshop to a weaver's cottage. You see original woodwork alongside careful restoration. I explain, joint by joint, what survived and what was rebuilt.
We move workshop to workshop at a careful pace, since the craft details reward close attention. I take questions on materials and technique from three summers spent restoring one of these houses myself. The session ends with a short list of what we saw.
This suits anyone interested in traditional craft, carpentry or how a single district can survive when a whole city burns around it. It also works well alongside the river walk.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Turku before heading out.
-
A carpenter's workshop 21 min
You see original joinery I helped restore, and I point out exactly which timbers are from 1827 and which were rebuilt from old photographs.
-
A weaver's cottage 21 min
The camera moves to a smaller wooden house set up as it would have looked in daily use, and I explain how the district survived the fire that took almost everything else.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Turku: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Cinnamon buns (korvapuusti) and Martti, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Helsinki time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
