About this tour

This session walks Portobello's promenade before finishing on the beach itself, looking at a side of Edinburgh most visitors never see. You see Victorian terraces facing the sea, a row of beach huts, and a long stretch of sand toward the Firth of Forth. Kirsty explains the resort's history and points out where its old outdoor pool once stood.

After a short sound check on the promenade, the walk continues down onto the sand, with time for questions throughout. Kirsty answers as you go and sends a short note afterwards on the best time of day for a calm sea.

It suits anyone who thinks of Edinburgh as only a city and wants to see its seaside side. It also works well for those interested in Victorian holiday history.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Edinburgh before heading out.

  2. The promenade 15 min

The camera moves along Portobello's long promenade, Victorian terraced houses facing the sea on one side. Kirsty points out the beach huts and explains the seaside town's history as an Edinburgh resort.

  3. The sands 15 min

Turning onto the beach itself, the camera takes in the long stretch of sand toward the Forth. Kirsty explains what the tide is doing and points out where the old outdoor swimming pool once stood.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Edinburgh: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Shortbread and New Town, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
