The Altstadt, rebuilt stone by stone
Highlights
- An old town largely rebuilt after the war
- Original stone recovered where possible
- Narrow streets reconstructed to match
- Old versus rebuilt, told apart up close
- A square facing the cathedral's towers
About this tour
This session looks at the Altstadt's rebuilt streets, from the open Alter Markt square to a narrow side street reconstructed after the war. You hear how much of the old town's apparent age is the result of careful postwar rebuilding using recovered stone where possible. It moves slowly through close, narrow streets.
We start in the open square before narrowing into the side streets, where the details reward a slower look. I explain the reconstruction history as we go and point out specific tells between old and rebuilt stone. A short note on the postwar rebuilding follows by message.
It suits anyone interested in how cities recover after destruction and what that recovery actually looks like up close. It also pairs well with a cathedral session for a fuller picture of the old town.

Itinerary

Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Cologne before heading out.
-
Alter Markt square 21 min
The camera opens on the square facing the cathedral, and I explain how much of what looks centuries old was rebuilt after wartime destruction using recovered original stone.
-
Narrow rebuilt street 21 min
Down a narrow side street, you see facades reconstructed to match older designs, and I point out small details that tell a rebuilt wall apart from an original one.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Cologne: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Kölsch beer and Altstadt, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
