Wieliczka's shaft tower, from the surface
Highlights
- A shaft tower with centuries of history
- Surface machinery, explained in detail
- Salt mined continuously until the 1990s
- Engineering behind a working mine
- Wieliczka's story, told from above ground
About this tour
This session looks at Wieliczka Salt Mine from its surface buildings, since filming inside the mine itself is not something the site allows. You see the historic shaft tower first, then the surface machinery once used to move miners and salt. It is a look at the engineering that supported centuries of continuous mining.
We start at the tower with a short sound check, then move around the surface buildings for a closer look at the machinery. I explain how the mine operated as we go, using photographs to describe the chambers below, and take questions throughout.
It suits anyone with an interest in mining history or engineering. It also pairs well with the planning call for anyone considering a visit underground themselves.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
