Grote Markt on a Friday night
Highlights
- Grote Markt at its busiest hour
- A side street of long-standing bars
- The Grote Kerk lit at night
- A square built for terraces
- The city's evening centre, live
About this tour
This session follows the Grote Markt from a full terrace to a quieter side street and finishes under the lit tower of the Grote Kerk. You see the square at its busiest, then a run of smaller bars a few doors away, and hear how long some of them have stood in the same spot. It is a loud, lively look at the centre after dark.
We start once the square is already busy, so the first minutes are mostly sound and movement before I settle into explaining what we are seeing. I keep the pace slower on the side street, where it is easier to talk, and take questions there rather than on the main square. A short list of the streets follows afterwards.
It suits anyone who wants a feel for the centre's evening energy without navigating it themselves. It also works well as a lead-in to a later, calmer session elsewhere in the city.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 6 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of The Hague before heading out.
-
Grote Markt 17 min
The camera opens on the square once the terraces have filled, and I explain how a market square by day turns into the busiest stretch of the city after dark.
-
Side street bars 17 min
Down a side street, you see a run of smaller bars with their own regulars, and I point out which ones have kept the same sign for decades.
-
Grote Kerk exterior 17 min
We finish beside the Grote Kerk, its tower lit against the sky, and I explain how the church has watched the square change use for centuries.
-
Your questions 11 min
Time to ask anything about The Hague: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 5 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Kibbeling and Statenkwartier, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Amsterdam time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.
Questions about this tour
What will the session cover?
The guide walks through The Hague, showing you Grote Markt and Side street bars live on camera, plus whatever else you would like to see.
What happens if my connection drops?
Rejoin with the same link within a few minutes and the guide will catch you up on anything you missed.
Can I ask the guide questions during the session, or is it a fixed script?
Anything, any time. Sessions leave room for your own questions throughout, not just at the end.
Is this suitable if I do not drink?
Yes. Say so when you book and the guide will focus on the atmosphere and venues rather than the drinks list.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
