Cathédrale de la Major, stone and domes
Highlights
- Striped stone across a whole facade
- A cluster of oversized domes
- Byzantine and Romanesque styles combined
- Built directly over an older cathedral
- One building, several architectural traditions
About this tour
This session looks at Cathédrale de la Major, from the striped stone of its exterior to the cluster of domes above its crossing. You see the mix of Byzantine and Romanesque influences in the design and learn why it was built directly over an older, smaller cathedral. It is a focused architectural look rather than a wider walk.
We stay close to the building throughout, moving only far enough to change the angle on the domes. I answer questions about the architecture as they come up. A short note on the building's history follows the call.
This suits anyone with an interest in church architecture or nineteenth century building projects. It also works well paired with a session down at the harbour just below.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Marseille before heading out.
-
The striped exterior 21 min
The camera looks up at the alternating bands of pale and dark stone that cover the cathedral's exterior, a style borrowed from further along the coast. I explain why the building was placed exactly where an older cathedral once stood.
-
The domes 21 min
From a step back, you see the cluster of domes stacked above the crossing, larger than most cathedrals of its period. I point out how the design mixes Byzantine and Romanesque influences.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Marseille: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Panisse and Vieux-Port, worth a slower look.

- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.

- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
