About this tour

This session takes a slower, more academic look at King's College Chapel than a typical highlights stop, moving from the exterior approach to the fan vaulting and the carved choir screen. It draws on decades of teaching Cambridge architecture rather than a set script. The pace is deliberately unhurried given how much detail the building actually holds.

We start outside with the approach along King's Parade, then move to where the vaulting and screen can both be filmed clearly. I answer detailed questions about construction and patronage as they come, since that is usually what this particular audience wants to know. A short reading note follows for anyone who wants to go deeper afterwards.

It suits architecture and history enthusiasts who want more depth than a passing glance. It is less suited to viewers wanting a quick, broad introduction to the city.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 6 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Cambridge before heading out.

  2. West front approach 17 min

The camera approaches the chapel from King's Parade, and I explain how the building's scale was meant to dominate the skyline of a much smaller mediaeval town.

  3. Fan vaulting from below 17 min

Standing where the interior can be filmed, you see the fan-vaulted ceiling stretching the length of the chapel, and I explain how the stonemasons managed the weight without visible supporting columns.

  4. Choir screen detail 17 min

The camera lingers on the carved screen separating the nave from the choir, and I point out the initials of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn worked into the woodwork.

  5. Your questions 11 min

Time to ask anything about Cambridge: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 5 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Cambridge burnt cream and Newnham, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 7 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
