About this tour

This session moves between Blandy's Wine Lodge, in a former Franciscan convent, and the Sé cathedral a short distance away. You see barrels ageing Madeira wine under original beams and the cathedral's Gothic tower from the square outside. Sofia threads both places into one story about the old town.

After a sound check in the lodge's courtyard, the walk moves through the cellars before finishing outside the cathedral, where Sofia describes the cedarwood ceiling you cannot see from the street. She keeps each stop focused on one clear idea rather than covering everything at once.

This suits viewers interested in how a single trade shaped a city over centuries. It also works for anyone who enjoys wine history without needing to be an expert already.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 6 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Funchal before heading out.

  2. Blandy's courtyard 17 min

The camera enters the wine lodge's courtyard, once part of a Franciscan convent, where barrels of Madeira wine sit stacked under the original beams.

  3. Estufagem cellar 17 min

Inside, I explain the estufagem process that heats the wine slowly to give Madeira its particular character, something no other fortified wine goes through in the same way.

  4. Sé cathedral exterior 17 min

From the square outside the Sé, the camera looks up at the cathedral's Gothic tower, finished in 1514. I describe the cedarwood ceiling inside, inlaid with ivory in the shape of stars.

  5. Your questions 11 min

Time to ask anything about Funchal: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 5 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Lapas grelhadas and Zona Velha, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Madeira time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
