I trained as a sommelier before I thought about guiding, and Blandy's Wine Lodge in the old town is still where I feel at home, among barrels that have been ageing Madeira wine since before my grandmother was born. On camera I walk through the lodge's courtyard and cellars, explaining the heating process that gives the wine its character and letting you see the labels and light through the old windows. I also take viewers past the Sé cathedral nearby, describing the cedarwood ceiling from outside when the doors are closed. History here is layered, and I try to show one clear thread each session rather than everything at once.
