About this tour

This session walks the ramparts of Forte de São Tiago before going inside to see whatever contemporary art exhibition is currently showing. You see a seventeenth century fort built for defence now used to display new Madeiran art. Sofia connects the building's old purpose to its current one.

The walk starts outside on the red ramparts, then moves into the fort's old chambers, where the light still comes through windows built for lookouts rather than galleries. Sofia changes what she shows here from month to month, depending on the exhibition running at the time.

This suits viewers interested in contemporary art as much as history. It also works well as a shorter session paired with one of Sofia's other old town walks.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Funchal before heading out.

  2. Fort ramparts 21 min

The camera walks the seafront ramparts of this seventeenth century fort, painted deep red, with the Atlantic on one side and the old town on the other.

  3. Contemporary art rooms 21 min

Inside, the fort's old chambers now hold changing exhibitions of contemporary Madeiran art. I show whichever pieces are on display that week and explain how the space still earns its light from small windows built for defence.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Funchal: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Espada com banana and Sé, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Madeira time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
