The Arch of Galerius, a Roman victory
Highlights
- A triumphal arch from the 4th century
- Carved scenes from a Roman campaign
- Stonework read up close
- A victory monument, still standing
- Roman Thessaloniki, explained in depth
About this tour
This session focuses on the Arch of Galerius, built to mark a Roman military victory in the early 4th century. You see the surviving stone piers and then the carved relief panels showing scenes from the campaign. It stays under and around this one monument.
I explain the history slowly, pointing out details in the carving that are easy to miss from a distance. Questions about the Roman period in the city come up often, and I answer them in as much depth as time allows.
This suits anyone with an interest in Roman history and monumental sculpture. It also works well paired with the Rotunda session, built by the same emperor nearby.

Good to know

- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Athens time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
