  • Trieste's most striking coastal building

About this tour

This session covers Miramare Castle, built on a rocky point above the sea for Archduke Maximilian of Austria. You see the white castle from outside and hear about the brief time he spent here before leaving to rule Mexico, then walk the grounds, laid out to give sea views from nearly every path. It is a short session on ambition, brief residence and a very permanent building.

We start with a sound check facing the castle, since the point can be windy. I move into the grounds for the second stop and take your questions about Maximilian's story as we go. A short reading list follows by message afterwards.

It suits anyone with an interest in nineteenth-century European history or coastal architecture. It also works well paired with a session at the Faro della Vittoria further along the coast.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide
  • Questions to your guide all the way

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Trieste before heading out.

  2. Miramare Castle exterior 21 min

The camera takes in the white castle on its rocky point above the sea, and I explain how it was built for Archduke Maximilian of Austria, who lived here only briefly before leaving to rule Mexico.

  3. Miramare Castle grounds 21 min

We walk the grounds facing the water, and I point out how the gardens were laid out to give views of the sea from nearly every path.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Trieste: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Gulasch alla triestina and Città Vecchia, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Rome time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
