Brixton Market's Caribbean stalls at Saturday rush
Highlights
- Produce supply chains decades old
- Fish rarely found in supermarkets
- Spice blends made to family recipes
- A market's full Saturday noise
- Community history told through food
About this tour
This session shows Brixton Market at its Saturday busiest, through the produce and fish stalls that have served the area's Caribbean and West African communities for generations. It covers long-standing supply chains for specific ingredients and family spice blends still made by hand. It is told by someone whose own family has shopped here since the 1960s.
We start at the produce stalls with the noise and calling in full swing, then move to a fish counter for the specialised ingredients. Questions about specific foods come up constantly, and I answer with genuine family knowledge rather than a general summary. I send a short list of what to try afterwards.
It suits food-curious viewers who want an authentic, unfiltered market atmosphere. It also suits anyone interested in the area's Caribbean-British community history told through food.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of London before heading out.
-
Fruit and veg stalls 21 min
The camera moves along stalls piled with produce imported specifically for the Caribbean and West African communities the market has long served, and I explain how supply chains for some ingredients have barely changed in decades.
-
Fish and spice counter 21 min
At a fish counter, I point out varieties rarely sold in mainstream supermarkets, and I explain how the spice blends sold alongside them are often made to family recipes rather than bought pre-mixed.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about London: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Fish and chips and Notting Hill, worth a slower look.
Good to know

- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
