Thatch and timber on the Shottery lane
Highlights
- A quiet lane into Shottery
- Field boundaries centuries old
- The cottage thatch in close detail
- How the timber frame was extended
- The family's history explained on site
About this tour
This session walks the lane into Shottery to look closely at the thatch and timber frame of the farmhouse where Anne Hathaway grew up, seen from outside in the early quiet before the crowds arrive. The camera lingers on the building's construction rather than moving quickly past it. It gives real weight to the details of the structure itself.
We start on the lane with the hedgerows and field lines, then settle in front of the cottage for a longer look at the building. Questions about the family and the construction come up naturally as we go, and I answer from records I have checked directly. A short note on the surrounding orchard's history follows at the end.
It suits anyone who wants the story told slowly, with attention to the building itself rather than a quick photo stop. It also works well early in the morning, before the town's other sessions get busy.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
