The bishop's ruined summer retreat
Highlights
- A summer palace left to ruin
- A hillside kept green rather than built on
- Pécs's quieter, higher ground
- A retreat abandoned centuries ago
- The old town, seen from above
About this tour
This session shows Tettye, the hillside park built around a ruined bishop's summer palace above the old town. You see the ruins themselves and then the wider park from higher on the hill, with an explanation of how the site was abandoned and later preserved. It stays within the park throughout.
I keep an easy, unhurried pace on this one after a short sound check, since the hillside setting rewards a slower look. Questions about the palace's history are welcome throughout.
This suits anyone who wants a quieter, outdoor side of Pécs above the old town. It also pairs well with the Mecsek hike session for a fuller picture of the hills.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Pécs before heading out.
-
Tettye Ruins 15 min
The camera moves through the ruins of a former bishop's summer palace, and I explain how the site fell into disrepair after being abandoned centuries ago.
-
Hillside Park View 15 min
You see the park surrounding the ruins from higher on the hill, and I point out how the site has been kept as a quiet green space rather than redeveloped.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Pécs: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Túrós rétes and Zsolnay Negyed, worth a slower look.
Good to know

- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.

- Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
