Mustard, mustard-makers and the market
Highlights
- A mustard maker trading since the 18th century
- Dijon mustard's recipe, explained properly
- Cheese and charcuterie inside Les Halles
- Food and history more linked than expected
- A bistro corner built on local ingredients
About this tour
This walk connects Dijon's most famous export, mustard, to the wider food culture around it, from a historic mustard shop to the stalls of Les Halles. You see the shopfront and the market up close before finishing at a quiet bistro corner. Aurélie, who worked at the fine arts museum before guiding, explains how mustard and the dukes' history are more linked than people expect.
The session opens with a sound check outside the mustard shop, then moves at a relaxed pace toward the market. Aurélie answers questions throughout, switching to Italian if a viewer prefers, and slows down wherever an ingredient draws interest. A short list of what was covered follows by message afterwards.
This suits anyone curious about regional food history beyond the condiment itself. It also works well before trying Burgundian dishes elsewhere in the city.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 6 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Dijon before heading out.
-
Historic mustard shop 17 min
The camera takes in the shopfront of a mustard maker trading since the 18th century, jars stacked in the window. I explain how Dijon mustard's recipe differs from the mild versions sold elsewhere.
-
Les Halles produce stalls 17 min
You see stalls of regional produce inside the iron-framed market, cheese and charcuterie alongside the mustard. I point out ingredients that turn up together in Burgundian cooking again and again.
-
A quiet bistro corner 17 min
The camera settles on a bistro terrace nearby, chalkboards listing dishes that use mustard and wine both sourced from the region. I explain how closely Dijon's food culture is tied to what grows around it.
-
Your questions 11 min
Time to ask anything about Dijon: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 5 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Pain d'épices de Dijon and Rue Musette / Les Halles quarter, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
