The old town's merchant houses
Highlights
- Upper floors built for storing goods
- A courtyard still marked by old hoists
- Munich's trading history, not its royal one
- Merchant houses hiding in plain sight
- The old town's commercial backbone
About this tour
This session looks at the merchant houses that once lined Munich's main trading street. You see the facades of buildings whose upper floors were built for storage rather than living, and a surviving courtyard where goods were hauled up through openings still visible today. It traces the old town's commercial history rather than its royal one.
I move at a steady pace along the street, pointing out the practical details built into buildings most visitors walk straight past. Questions are welcome throughout, and I send a short note afterwards on what we covered.
This suits anyone interested in trade and everyday commercial history rather than palaces and churches. It also pairs well with the Asamkirche session for a broader old town picture.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
